Is chimney liner size (diameter) specific to certain water heaters?

Often when having a new natural gas or propane water heater installed, a new chimney liner is recommended, or even mandated by code

Answer

When installing a new gas-burning appliance, different specifications may require a specific chimney liner size to operate properly and safely. Often a new high-efficiency furnace is installed and leaves behind (orphans) a water heater – which is now venting by itself into an old, larger lining.  Many times it’s recommended to install a properly sized liner to accommodate the remaining appliance.
